Bedford Messiah Choir was set up in 1937 and has been performing Handel’s Messiah in Bedford every year apart from a short break during the war years. Local singers from across Bedford come together to rehearse for four weeks before giving a performance at the start of Advent.
The next performance will be held on Saturday 2 December 2017, in Bunyan Meeting, Mill Street, Bedford and will mark the Bedford Messiah Choir’s 80th Anniversary.
The choir follows a tradition established by Handel himself to donate proceeds from ticket sales to a different local charity each year. Since 2000, well over £1000 has been given to the chosen charity each year. In 2017, the choir is pleased to be supporting the work of the Bedford Hospitals Charity which is fundraising to renew the Primrose Car Service vehicles and provide a new echocardiagram machine for the Intensive Care Unit at Bedford Hospital.
The choir is conducted by Janet Welsh, who taught in public schools in Bedford and also conducts Kempston Musical Society, Ouse Valley Singers and (formerly) the Bedford Hospital Choir.
